Wyatt’s Take

  • Trump administration rolls out massive $500 million for charter schools.
  • Traditional public schools post lowest ever student test scores.
  • Push for parents to have choices and money follows them.

The Trump administration just put $500 million behind charter schools, the largest ever investment for school choice. With public school test scores dropping, this move aims to give parents more power over their children’s education.

“Following the release of the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress scores, which showed dismal educational outcomes across the nation, the Department plans to award grants totaling $500 million for charter schools to support education choice in fiscal year 2025,” the Department of Education said. “This marks the largest investment ever in the Charter Schools Program and fulfills a commitment the Department made earlier this year.”

The latest national scores show seniors’ math and reading lower than ever, making parents demand better. Many states only let families send kids to schools in their district, but charter schools break that rule and give more options. Since COVID-19, a lot of parents have pulled their kids from public schools and looked for alternatives, including charter schools and homeschooling.

On top of charter school funding, the administration is boosting American history, civics, HBCUs, and TCCUs.

“We are proud to make the largest investment in the Charter Schools Grants Program in the Department’s history, support American history programs that will inspire young people to be active and informed citizens, and recognize Historically Black Colleges and Universities’ and Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities’ historic contributions to improving education and opportunity in our country,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. “The Trump Administration will use every available tool to meaningfully advance educational outcomes and ensure every American has the opportunity to succeed in life.”

Critics worry charter funding takes resources from traditional schools that could help teachers and public school buildings. But more states, like Arizona, are moving money with the student, and districts are feeling the heat to improve or lose students and funding. Homeschooling is also rising fast as parents seek something better.

When parents have a real choice, schools have to work harder for our kids. This could be the start of a big change in American education.

Wyatt Matters

Giving families control over education dollars makes sure every child gets a shot at success, no matter where they live or what their ZIP code is. When parents can choose what’s best for their own kids, schools in Middle America have to listen and do better by our families.
