January 1, Ukraine Peace Talks Face Tough Stand on Land

• Talks for ending the Ukraine war are making progress but hitting a wall over land disputes.
• U.S. officials say there’s a deal framework, but Russia wants Ukrainian territory and Ukraine won’t give it up.
• Experts warn Putin isn’t ready to compromise while Ukraine demands a fair peace.

The U.S. is pushing a new plan to try and end the Ukraine war, but the real fight is over land. Russia wants parts of Ukraine, and Ukraine refuses to hand any over.

Both sides say talks are closer than before, but no breakthrough yet.

President Trump says there’s been

“tremendous progress”

with his envoy set to meet Russian officials and U.S. leaders talking to Ukraine.

America confirmed Kyiv has accepted most of the latest deal, with only smaller issues left to sort out.

France and other allies are backing the idea of

“just and lasting peace.”

But new Russian strikes show the fighting isn’t slowing down.

Oleksii Honcharenko, an opposition lawmaker from Ukraine, said,

“My personal position is that we need peace as soon as possible… some things are unacceptable. But it is a workable framework.”

He doesn’t care who wrote the plan as long as it leads to peace.

He admits that dropping sanctions would hurt, but Ukraine’s army is not close to Moscow, so a perfect solution isn’t likely.

Rep. Andy Barr (R-Ky.) blamed the war on Biden.

“Russia invaded Ukraine because Joe Biden was the weakest president in American history.”

Barr claims Trump’s strength would have prevented the war, calling him

“the peace president… the only leader who can end this war and bring stability back to Europe.”

Former Russian deputy finance minister Sergey Aleksashenko said,

“The biggest difference is territorial. Russia wants to grab what it was not able to take by military means.”

“Ukraine does not want to give up. All other points could be resolved, but not territory.”

He sees no sign Putin will bend, saying Moscow thinks Western support for Kyiv is fading and may just try to outlast them.

Retired Gen. Philip Breedlove, once NATO’s top commander, stated,

“I don’t see Ukraine agreeing to give Russia land Russia has never conquered. It is an incredibly, incredibly bad thought.”

Breedlove warns that Putin wants to change all of Eastern Europe, not just Ukraine.

He noted that President Zelenskyy is being heavily pressured by Western countries holding back aid.

Breedlove also said,

“It’s very clear he’s being threatened with no support… But they will not stop fighting.”

Early U.S. proposals had

“egregious”

demands, but as Ukraine’s voice was heard, things improved, though Putin still objects to the latest terms.

Breedlove doesn’t think Ukraine’s lawmakers are ready to give up their people’s land; they want a solid peace, not just any peace.

“I’m not sure that they’re ready to make a lot of concessions to do that,” he said.
