  • The Justice Department says states must clean up their voter lists or face lawsuits.
  • Eight states are already being sued for not handing over complete voter data.
  • Some state Democrats are resisting federal poll watchers at elections.

The Justice Department is cracking down on states that don’t provide voter roll data as federal law requires. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon says states that don’t comply will be taken to court, and eight lawsuits are already underway.

“We’ve been asking states to produce the data of their voter rolls, to be able to make sure that they only have citizens on the rolls and that they don’t have duplicates and have people voting in multiple jurisdictions,” Dhillon said. “So we’ve had to file eight lawsuits throughout the United States to enforce our data requests, which is something that they have to comply with under the Voting Rights Act and Civil Rights Act of 1960.”

The lawsuits target California, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, New York, Oregon, and Maine. The DOJ wants full records, including names, addresses, and partial Social Security info, to make sure only eligible people vote. Dhillon stated this job has been “neglected” for years and that her team is now enforcing rules no one bothered to before.

The DOJ will also send federal poll-watchers to monitor special elections in California and Passaic County, New Jersey. In some of these areas, officials are pushing back, with California’s governor fiercely criticizing the move.

Some state leaders argue they can’t share private info, and a few are getting ready to fight the DOJ in court. The DOJ says this is about keeping elections fair and making sure every legal vote counts.
