January 1, Belgian PM Targeted in Terror Plot, Suspects Nabbed

• Three young suspects were arrested for plotting a terror attack on Belgium’s prime minister.

Belgian authorities stopped a terror plot aimed at Prime Minister Bart De Wever and other politicians. Three suspects, all born after 2000, were arrested in Antwerp.

Two of the young suspects are still in custody and will appear before a judge. The investigation is ongoing as security officials search for more details.

Prosecutor Ann Fransen said in a press conference.

“There are indications that the intention was to carry out a jihadist-inspired terrorist attack targeting politicians.”

Authorities believe the suspects planned to use a drone carrying what looked like an improvised explosive device.

Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot called the plot

“shocking.”

He said Belgium continues to boost security to fight the threat, especially with new technology like drones.

“This event forcefully reminds us that the terrorist threat remains very real and that we must remain vigilant,”

he said.

Belgian prosecutors have started over eighty new terrorism cases so far this year, already more than the total for last year.
