January 1, UN Set to Restore Sanctions After Iran Deal Collapse
Wyatt’s Take
- The UN reimposes heavy sanctions on Iran, ending the 2015 nuclear deal.
- The move follows blows to Iran from Israeli and American military action.
- The US and western nations push Iran toward real negotiations.
The United Nations Security Council voted to bring back tough sanctions on Iran at the end of the month, making official the end of the old nuclear deal. American and Israeli military strikes already shook Iran’s nuclear program this year.
After President Trump left the agreement and ramped up pressure, the UN now uses a “snapback” to restore sanctions against Iran’s regime due to its secretive nuclear activity. This is the third big setback for Iran in just one year, with further actions crippling its capability to enrich nuclear fuel.
Experts from the U.S. government and International Atomic Energy Agency say the latest bombings put Iran’s nuclear work back decades. These snapback sanctions aim to force Iran to the table for a real deal, not just talk.
“To be absolutely clear, our vote on this resolution does not impede the possibility of real diplomacy, despite any statements to the contrary,” said Acting US Representative to the United Nations Dorothy Shea.
She added, “We must, with one voice, press leadership in Iran to choose the path of peace and, by extension, prosperity for the Iranian people.”
Iran calls the UN’s action “unlawful” and threatens to pull out from key treaties and stop nuclear site inspections. The Iranian regime is accused of breaking limits on nuclear enrichment since the US left the deal, ramping up creation of possible weapons fuel.
The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed Iran crossed uranium enrichment limits in 2019, and the regime expanded centrifuge operations as well. The snapback decision comes after Iran tried but failed to persuade the UK, France, and Germany to extend talks. French President Emmanuel Macron said he doesn’t see Iran’s offers as serious right now.
Soon, Iran will face the same UN-backed arms embargo, missile controls, asset freezes and travel bans that existed before 2015. There is doubt whether Russia or China will help enforce the measures, but US and European leaders back strong action.
Russia, supporting Iran, accuses western governments of abusing council rules just to apply pressure, claiming Europe is abandoning diplomacy.
Wyatt Matters
Keeping dangerous regimes in check matters to everyday folks worried about safety and stability. Strong action against Iran’s nuclear threat sends a message that reckless behavior comes with real consequences. Middle America understands the value of standing tough when the stakes are high.
