January 1, Taxpayer Dollars Fueling Controversial Transgender Surgeries Surge
The Biden-Harris team is letting your tax dollars pay for all kinds of transgender surgeries, including kids’ sex-change surgeries, and folks have found enough info to guess at how much this is costing. From early 2018 to late 2023, 16 states spent over $165 million on these services, like puberty blockers, hormones, and surgeries. More than $45 million was spent on kids 17 and younger.
The Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF) got the info by asking states how much they paid for these services through state insurance programs. These programs are partly funded by Medicaid. The DCNF looked at medical codes to find out just what services taxpayers are covering.
The info came from places like Michigan, Idaho, Illinois, and more. Illinois, Oregon, and Washington spent the most. For example, Illinois shelled out over $40 million on these services, with more than $14 million for kids under 17. That’s a lot of taxpayer money going to something folks are worried about—especially when it comes to kids.
The DCNF found that there’s been a 60% increase in these surgeries for adults and kids since Biden got into office. From 2020 to 2022, the spending went from about $28 million to nearly $45 million across 15 states.
Many states didn’t want to share their data or asked for a big fee to do so. Rhode Island, for example, wanted more than $3,000 just to pull the records. Seems like transparency isn’t their priority.
A lot of this growth in spending is due to policies pushed by Democrat leaders. Obama started it in 2014 by allowing Medicare to cover these surgeries and then in 2016 expanded it. This forced insurance plans to cover these services nationwide, even for children.
But when Trump was in office, he tried to stop it by making rules that only covered medical procedures based on biological sex. But Biden reversed that when he got into office, making them cover treatments based on how people feel about their gender rather than the gender they were born.
A 2023 study showed a tripling of these surgeries after Obama’s rules were applied, which shows just how big this is getting. It’s something people on the right are concerned about, especially because it includes young kids and expensive surgeries.
Do No Harm, a group keeping an eye on this issue, found almost 14,000 children received transgender treatments from 2019 to 2023. They warn that these actions can change minors’ lives forever and aren’t based on strong science.
Folks are upset about tax money funding these surgeries, especially when they think it’s pushing a political agenda instead of real healthcare. Many people believe doctors should focus on solid evidence and real medical needs, not politics.
So, it looks like the debate about how our tax dollars are spent on these huge costs isn’t going away anytime soon.
Wyatt Matters!
Many people are concerned about how much money is being spent on transgender surgeries, especially for kids. From 2018 to 2023, over $165 million was used across 16 states for things like puberty blockers, hormones, and surgeries. Over $45 million of this was for kids 17 and younger. Some folks worry about using taxpayer money for these procedures, thinking it’s part of a bigger political plan.
There has been a big increase in these surgeries, especially since President Biden took office. The spending on these medical services grew from $28 million to almost $45 million between 2020 and 2022 in just 15 states. This change in policy, allowing Medicaid to pay for these procedures, started with President Obama and was stopped by President Trump, but then it went back into effect when Biden became president. This back and forth makes people question what’s right and what really counts as necessary healthcare.
Many people think healthcare decisions should be based on strong evidence and medical need, not politics. Groups like Do No Harm argue that surgeries and treatments can have life-long effects on kids and need more solid scientific backing. Taxpayers are worried that their money is being used for things that aren’t considered essential or backed by science. This debate about funding and healthcare is likely to continue, as people on both sides have strong views about what’s best for children and society.
