Disney’s been caught in a bit of a storm recently, folks. The entertainment giant has come under fire for filming its live-action remake of “Mulan” in Xinjiang, a region known for alleged human rights abuses against Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslim groups by the Chinese Communist Party.

After facing significant pressure from Republican Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana and other congress members, Disney has now reportedly agreed to meet with representatives from the Uyghur Human Rights Project. Previously, Disney had made a promise to meet with victims’ families and advocates, but according to Rep. Banks, the company had backed out.

In his letter to Disney CEO Bob Iger, Banks also took issue with Disney thanking several Chinese government agencies, accused of participating in genocide, in the credits of “Mulan.” Banks called on Disney to take accountability and explain why they reneged on their promise to meet with the advocates.

Almost a month after Banks’ public call-out, Disney has apparently had a change of heart. The company has agreed to meet with the families of Uyghur genocide victims and their advocates, according to reports.

This step taken by Rep. Banks is one of many actions members of Congress have recently undertaken in their fight against the alleged systematic extermination of Uyghur Muslims and other minorities in China. But for now, all eyes are on Disney to see how they handle this growing controversy.
