January 1, Man Who Shot Ronald Reagan Free After 41 Years
John Hinckley Jr., the man who shot and wounded then-President Ronald Reagan in 1981, has been freed from court oversight after four decades.
“After 41 years 2 months and 15 days, FREEDOM AT LAST!!!” Hinckley wrote on Twitter.
The update comes after US District Judge Paul Friedman previously said he would grant Hinckley “unconditional release” if he remained mentally stable.
Last September, Friedman said the restrictions would’ve been lifted “a long, long, long time ago” if Hickley’s target hadn’t been Reagan.
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute said it was “both saddened and concerned” over Hinckley’s release.
“Mr. Hinckley is the man responsible for the attempted assassination of President Reagan and the shooting of three other brave men, one who eventually died of his injuries years later,” the Reagan Foundation said in a statement. “We strongly oppose his release into society where he apparently seeks to make a profit from his infamy.”
