January 1, Pro Tennis Star Disrespects Ball Girl and Sparks Outrage at U.S. Open

In a display of stunning disrespect, Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva has found herself at the center of controversy following an interaction with a U.S. Open ball girl. This incident occurred during her third-round match against Jasmine Paolini, resulting in a 6-3, 6-4 defeat for Putintseva and inciting a wave of outrage both at the venue and on social media.

The video circulating online clearly shows Putintseva snubbing the ball girl during the second set of the match. Instead of acknowledging the girl’s efforts, she stood still, allowing the balls to bounce off her in a moment that drew boos from the crowd and a torrent of criticism online.

Comments on social media were swift and unforgiving. “Everyone should equally respect ball kids. They are also working hard. Respect,” one user posted. Another reminded followers, “Completely disrespectful behavior, she is a horrible role model.” A third chimed in, “You can tell a lot about a person’s character by how they treat those below them.”

In the face of this backlash, Putintseva was forced to backtrack, issuing a public apology. She played the victim card, suggesting her disrespect was merely the result of frustration with her own performance. “I want to apologize to the ball girl for the way I was, when she was giving me balls,” she posted. “Honestly speaking it was not about her. I was really pissed at myself by not winning the game from the breakpoint and then got empty with my emotions and deep in my thoughts, that I was not even focusing on what’s going on and who gives me the ball… All the ball kids [were] doing amazing as always at the open.”

This apology, however, may ring hollow to many who witnessed the incident. The ball kids, often overlooked yet vital to the smooth running of these tournaments, deserve better treatment and certainly more respect. It raises important questions about accountability and the behavior we endorse and accept from public figures.

As Putintseva’s journey at the U.S. Open comes to an end, losing to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, the focus shifts to the continued performance of dedicated individuals like the ball kids, who make these tournaments possible. Paolini moves forward to face Karolina Muchova in the Round of 16.

It’s crucial we continue to call out such behavior and ensure those in privileged positions remember the basic decency required in all interactions, sports or otherwise.

Unprofessional behavior from a professional athlete is unacceptable.

PERHAPS A THREE YEAR BAN FROM THE U. S. OPEN WOULD BE A ( GENTLE ) REMINDER TO EXERCISE BETTER JUDGEMENT IN THE FUTURE. AN APOLOGY ISSUED TO THE BALL GIRL POSTED ON A BILLBOARD WOULD ALSO BE APPROPRIATE. IF THESE ARE NOT ACCOMPLOSHED, AN INVITATION TO THE U.S. OPEN WILL NOT BE FORTHCOMING!!!
