January 1, Young Americans Drift From Church Roots

Wyatt’s Take

  • Fewer young people in America call themselves Protestant than say they have no religion at all.
  • Pew’s findings show a steady shift, with today’s youth far less tied to churches than older folks were.
  • Christianity’s numbers nationwide have steadied, but questions hang over its future among the next generation.

Pew Research’s latest data shows more 18-to-29 year olds don’t claim any religion than those who say they are Protestants.

For every eight young folks without faith ties, only five identify with Protestant churches.

Overall, out of every hundred Americans, forty identify as Protestant and twenty-nine say they have no religious connection at all.

“This group — sometimes called the religious ‘nones’ — is made up of people who describe themselves as atheists, agnostics or ‘nothing in particular’ when it comes to religion,” Pew Research Center noted.

Catholic and evangelical numbers lag behind the fast-growing religiously unaffiliated crowd.

The nation as a whole is still mostly Christian, but the growth of “nones” among the young stands out.

Pew points out that, despite decades of decline, the number of Americans calling themselves Christian looks to have leveled off recently.

About sixty-two percent of Americans still identify as Christian, though young folks are much less likely to do so.

Smaller faith traditions together make up about three percent, including groups like Orthodox Christians and Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Lately, some churches have seen increased interest, especially following big events and rising Bible sales among youth.

Will this signal a real turn toward faith among the next generation, or are we experiencing a lasting shift?

Wyatt Matters

The heartland values faith, but these findings show many young adults are searching or drifting. Our communities thrive when folks are connected, so it’s worth talking about what guides us and our kids.

Adults, mothers, fathers must communicate with their children. Crime is out of control and there are still too many illegal immigrants, whom we have no idea who they are, in The United States Of America? PREDITORS are amongst us and churches are the BEST place for our young. Finding GOD, putting trust in Our Lord & Savior is the ticket to safety and a better life for everyone. Please, think this through? There are too many wolves in sheep’s clothing!

The pressures from the devil, the world, and our sinful flesh are extreme, especially in these times when an alarming percentage of people think it is perfectly okay to respond to disagreements with violence. Small wonder that young people, even if they had at one time been inclined toward church, are abandoning it and even flat-out denying it, out of a sense of self preservation. Parents, and fathers in particular, have an enormous responsibility to equip their children to withstand society’s assaults from the foundation of God’s Word. It is well documented that parents who don’t attend church regularly with their children are far more likely to have children who fall away. Churches, too, need to address this as the crisis that it is, and be attentive at the first signs of straying. And ALL of us need to pray for these young souls. Lord, have mercy!

The youth moving away from religion is not surprising given how even the Catholic religion has inserted itself into politics and how they have left their traditions in favor of today’s progressive movements.

It is the churches doing the drifting. Too many are actually acting like political action committees. Time to start paying taxes and lose your tax-exempt status. The UMC is the latest to split over XX vs XY. Are they the same or different and can they be changed other than in your mind. Just the facts.
