Cloud has built a reputation as one of the WNBA’s most outspoken progressive voices. She’s repeatedly criticized America, police officers, and traditional values while enjoying the freedoms and prosperity this country provides. These athletes love to lecture everyone about justice and equality, but they can’t tolerate anyone who doesn’t march in lockstep with their ideology. They claim to champion free speech while trying to silence those who disagree.

Freedom has consistently called out the NBA and major sports brands for their cozy relationships with China despite the documented genocide of Uyghur Muslims. He’s spoken truth to power when it actually cost him something. Meanwhile, Cloud and athletes like her only speak out when it’s safe, profitable, and gets them praise from the media.

The WNBA continues to struggle with attendance and financial viability despite constant media promotion. Games routinely draw sparse crowds. Yet instead of focusing on basketball and entertaining fans, the league has become a platform for political activism that alienates a huge portion of potential supporters.

American sports fans are tired of being lectured by millionaire athletes who’ve never experienced real hardship or real oppression. They’re especially tired of watching those same athletes attack someone like Freedom who actually sacrificed for his principles.

Cloud’s confrontation with Freedom speaks volumes about the state of professional sports. The people who claim to care most about human rights are often the ones most hostile to those who actually fight for them.
