January 1, Why Kamala Harris is no longer the Democrats’ plan B

At one time, Vice President Kamala Harris was meant to be a one-term President Joe Biden’s successor. By then, Biden would be in his 80s, and Harris would continue the administration’s agenda as the first woman to become president. However, as things stand now, experts aren’t sure if Harris will even be on the ticket in 2024.
Biden’s falling approval rating has been a hot topic, but his VP’s is even lower. A poll from USA Today-Suffolk University shows that Harris only has a 28 percent approval rating among voters, to Biden’s 38 percent. A survey from the same organizations found a 46 percent approval rating for Harris when she took office.
Where has it gone wrong?
The invisible VP
Harris has kept a low profile as vice president. Her last sit-down interview with a major broadcast news network was with NBC’s Lester Holt on June 8 — 154 days ago — and it could have gone better.
Holt asked Harris if she had plans to visit the US-Mexico border.
“At some point, you know, we are going to the border,” she said. “We’ve been to the border. So, this whole thing about the border — we’ve been to the border. We’ve been to the border.”
However, this was inaccurate. Holt pointed out the inaccuracy: “You haven’t been to the border.”
“And I haven’t been to Europe,” Harris snapped before laughing. “And, I mean, I don’t understand the point that you’re making.”
Since then, Harris has only appeared on The View — which was plagued with its own blunders. Some experts think the administration is taking an “out of sight, out of mind” approach with the VP.
Curb your enthusiasm
Though Harris is referred to as a 2020 presidential candidate, that’s inaccurate. She dropped out of the race in December 2019 after dismal polling numbers, bringing in less support than Andrew Yang.
During an interview with Axios, Harris seemed to blame the lack of enthusiasm for her campaign on her gender and ethnicity.
Harris: “I have also started to perhaps be more candid talking about what I describe and what I believe to be the elephant in the room about my campaign.”
Axios: “What is that?”
Harris: “Electability.”
Axios: “What do you mean?”
Harris: “Electability. You know, essentially, is America ready for a woman and a woman of color to be president of the United States?”
However, Barack Obama won the presidential race twice, and Hillary Clinton garnered 3 million more votes than former President Donald Trump in the 2016 election.
Americans losing confidence
The previously mentioned USA Today-Suffolk poll shows dismal support for the Biden administration. When asked, “What is the one things Americans want President Biden to do in the next year?” the top response was to resign/retire/quit.
- Resign/retire/quit: 20 percent
- Economy/jobs: 11 percent
- Unite/help the country: 8 percent
- Immigration/border control: 8 percent
- COVID/mandates: 6 percent
- Infrastructure bills: 5 percent
- Inflation: 4 percent
- Health care: 3 percent
- Climate change/environment: 3 percent
- Bipartisanship: 3 percent
Additionally, 64 percent of voters don’t want Biden to run again — including 28 percent of Democrats.
With the 2022 congressional race rapidly approaching, it remains to be seen if the Biden administration can change its trajectory.
