January 1, Virginia School Accused of Hiding Secret Abortions
Wyatt’s Take
- A teacher claims a Virginia school covered up a staff-arranged student abortion.
- School leaders are under fire for taking months to investigate whistleblower warnings.
- The case raises questions about parental rights and school transparency.
A high school teacher in Virginia says she tried to alert officials several times that a social worker arranged and paid for a student’s abortion behind her guardian’s back, but claims she was ignored and punished instead.
The superintendent says they just learned about these claims but acted fast to bring in an outside investigator.
Zenaida Perez, who teaches English as a second language, says she spoke up seven times since May 2022 about what she saw as a cover-up, but nothing changed.
“Your recollection is outstanding,” Perez was told by the investigator, Mary McGowan, during a long interview about the situation.
Records and letters back up Perez’s timeline, showing she first raised concerns in May 2022 with her principal and later sent letters and followed up in more meetings.
School policy encourages staff to support students to talk to their parents about pregnancy, but does not say parents must be told about every conversation.
“As this is an ongoing personnel matter, we are not able to comment at this time,” a spokesman for the district said.
Perez says she moved to the U.S. from Cuba, earned her teaching degree, and has worked with immigrant kids for years.
At Centreville High School, about 20% of students are learning English and a quarter live in low-income households.
Perez says a student from Guatemala told her that a social worker made an abortion appointment and paid the bill in 2021, all without the family’s consent.
The student gave a statement later:
“She helped me with a pregnancy termination, or abortion.”
“She paid for the procedure and kept quiet about it, not letting my family know. I was worried that my family would react very badly if they knew about my pregnancy and the abortion.”
Perez said the girl’s guardian, her uncle, was furious when he found out.
Perez kept urging the principal to do something, even documenting her concerns by email and a recorded meeting. She says the response was minimal and school leaders doubted her claims.
Another teacher, Julie Perry, praised Perez for her persistence. “God bless Zenaida for fighting through this,” Perry said. “What’s so sad are the higher-ups. They’re not concerned about the truth. They’re concerned about keeping silent about these abortions.”
“I feel strong. I have truth and God on my side.”
As Fairfax County’s investigation continues, parents are left wondering what’s really going on at their children’s school.
Let’s make sure parents know exactly what’s happening in their local schools — no more secrets behind closed doors. Stay tuned and stand up for your rights.
Wyatt Matters
When schools dodge tough questions and keep families in the dark, trust breaks down. Parents deserve honesty and a say in every part of their kids’ lives, especially when values and family rights are at stake.
