Wyatt’s Take

  • UVA removed a Revolutionary War statue honoring George Rogers Clark.
  • The university plans to replace it with a park focused on Indigenous “land acknowledgement.”
  • Locals say this is part of a bigger push to erase American history.

UVA took down a statue of George Rogers Clark, a well-known Revolutionary War hero, in 2021. Now, the school is turning the spot into a park designed to honor an Indian tribe’s land instead of American history.

The plans say the park will celebrate “the Virginia landscape and Indigenous stewardship practices.”

Ann H. McLean, a Virginia resident and art historian, said,

“Rather than celebrating the courage and problem-solving of exploration represented by the George Rogers Clark sculpture, cultural Marxist city leaders and academics are choosing to celebrate those who had no written language, no concept of private property, no trial by jury, or many other improvements brought here by western civic life and Biblical practice.”

Charlottesville has become known for removing historic statues, including those of Confederate generals and the Clark expedition statue.

Clark helped win the Northwest Territory for America, which includes states like Ohio and Indiana. His statue was considered a “masterful and complex work of art.”

Today, the school’s new plan is a park as a land acknowledgement to the Monacan Indian tribe, ignoring Clark and the Founders.

McLean also said,

“Rather than teaching students full historical truth, the plans to glorify paganism represents both a back-sliding and ingratitude for advances in western civilization which benefits all citizens of the United States of America.”

Even though the university claims the new park tells Virginia’s whole story, many see it as erasing achievements that built America.

We need to cut all the namby pamby catering to all the liberals and celebrate our history!

I agree with Charlie about cutting the namby pamby catering to all the liberals and celebrate our history.

Having family here since about 1636 and celebrating the tribal warfare the Natives committed upon other tribes this is wrong to celebrate those who are of that ethnicity. Until some of those of Native American heritage come forward and admit to the warfare they committed upon others there never needs to be any celebration of their way of life.
