January 1, US drone strike killed ten family members, including children, relative says
The Biden administration carried out a defensive airstrike in Kabul, targeting a suspected ISIS-K suicide bomber who posed an “imminent” threat to the airport, US Central Command said Sunday.
The strike targeted a vehicle in a residential neighborhood. Ten family members, including seven children, were killed, according to a relative of the deceased. The youngest victims were two 2-year-old girls.
“We are not ISIS or Daesh and this was a family home — where my brothers lived with their families,” a brother of one of the victims said.
Relatives held a funeral Monday after identifying remains at a Kabul hospital. Family members shouted, “Death to America.”
“We are aware of reports of civilians casualties. We take these reports extremely seriously,” Army Maj. Gen. William Taylor of the Joint Staff said during a press briefing.
