January 1, Trump Pushes to End Risky Mail-In Voting

Wyatt’s Take

  • Trump pushes to end mail-in ballots, saying they’re open to fraud.
  • Many states still allow no-excuse mail voting, though other countries ban it.
  • Republicans call for Election Day-only voting and better ballot security.

President Trump is putting the spotlight on stopping mail-in voting, calling it unsafe and prone to fraud. Over half the country still allows people to vote by mail without a special reason, even as many nations outlaw it for security reasons.

Judge James Ho of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit recently wrote, “Mail-in ballots are not secure.” He backed a Texas law requiring voter ID to help keep elections honest.

Our postal service wasn’t built for running elections. Its delivery has slowed, with unreliable postmarks and mail delays making it impossible to always know when a ballot arrives.

Trump’s team wants Republicans to vote early if needed, but they also push for a return to in-person voting on Election Day to boost trust in our system. Federal law already says national elections should be held on only one day, and many say going back would make the process fairer for everyone.

The bipartisan Commission on Federal Election Reform called absentee ballots “the largest source of potential voter fraud,” which the Fifth Circuit echoed in its decision. Still, liberals criticize Trump’s focus on this issue and question if he can actually end mail-in voting by executive order.

Democrats claim mail-in ballots are safe, but they block efforts to check signatures for fraud. Some states got rid of records from 2020’s massive mail-in vote that handed Biden the win, raising even more doubts among voters.

Congress has not held real hearings on the problems, nor has the Justice Department launched real investigations. Instead, Republicans like Mark Meadows, Trump’s former chief of staff, face charges for questioning Georgia’s mail-in ballots in 2020.

Since that election, 19 states have tightened mail-in voting rules. In 2020, 33 million mail-in ballots went out to voters. No truthful answer has ever come from Washington about how many were legal, and 2024 saw a steep drop in those votes.

“REMEMBER, WITHOUT FAIR AND HONEST ELECTIONS, AND STRONG AND POWERFUL BORDERS, YOU DON’T HAVE EVEN A SEMBLANCE OF A COUNTRY,” Trump posted Monday before meeting European leaders.

Other countries have banned mail-in voting or added strict rules after fraud cases. European nations like Germany only count mail ballots received by Election Day. France got rid of mail-in ballots altogether.

For the 2024 race, nearly half the states limited mail-in voting. Kamala Harris took in 6.3 million fewer votes than Biden did in 2020, while Trump picked up another three million votes himself.

The Harris campaign spent $1.5 billion, including payments for ballot harvesting, but there’s no clear answer for where that money went. The House and DOJ should investigate, but haven’t done so yet.

Trump told reporters, “We, as a Republican Party, are going to do everything possible that we get rid of mail-in ballots.” He said an executive order is on the way to end the practice nationally.

Even though the DOJ has spent millions investigating Trump critics, it has done nothing about possible fraud from drop-boxes or ballot harvesting. No one has really explained the swing of 6.3 million Democrat votes gone between 2020 and 2024.

Some argue Germany lets people vote by mail, but German law is tougher and only counts ballots on time. France and most other countries have banned it after issues with fraud.

In many states, signatures aren’t checked and late ballots are still accepted. Paid operatives are allowed to collect ballots long past Election Day, making our system open to abuse.

This isn’t just about Trump. It’s about making American elections trustworthy again. Folks in the heartland want to know their voice matters and no one’s cheating at the ballot box.
