January 1, Trump Backs Epstein File Release, GOP Shifts Fast
Wyatt’s Take
- Trump urged GOP to support Epstein file release, surprising many.
- The House passed the bill with near-total Republican support.
- This move could shape political battles in the 2026 midterms.
President Trump called on House Republicans to back the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, reversing his earlier stance. The House quickly passed the bill, showing almost complete Republican unity behind Trump’s new direction.
This fast shift highlights how the Epstein issue continues to hang over politics and can distract from economic matters that matter most to voters.
“When you talk about the Epstein hoax, what happens is, you’re not talking about how well we’ve done.”
Trump had dismissed releasing the files as a political trick, but now says,
“we have nothing to hide.”
Many Republicans had resisted, but only one voted against the new measure after Trump’s change of heart.
Pressure is on leading up to the Georgia Senate race, where top GOP candidates have now lined up behind Trump and called for the files to be made public.
A spokesperson for Senate hopeful Derek Dooley said he
“agrees with President Trump that the files should be released so we can move on from this distraction and hypocrisy from typical D.C. politicians.”
Representative Buddy Carter, after switching his vote, stated,
“I’ve said all along that this is a Democrat distraction, designed to deflect from the failure of the Ossoff Schumer shutdown… I trust President Trump’s plan to get quickly past this and will follow his lead so we can put this hoax behind us once and for all.”
Republican strategists warn that releasing the files is a risky gamble but might be the only way to calm the controversy before 2026. Dennis Lennox, a GOP strategist, sees signs of division growing inside the party over issues like this and says it’s part of positioning for future leadership.
Others like Chris Pack downplay the impact, saying voters care more about rising costs than scandals tied to Epstein.
Democrats believe the real fallout will come if the files contain new or damaging information.
Democratic strategist Brad Bannon warned that economic issues and fresh revelations could hit Republicans hard in the next election cycle.
As he put it,
“Trump could tell nearly any Republican to jump off the Empire State Building except for that one, and they would ask him head first or feet first.”
The release of the Epstein files could bring new twists, but for now it’s a high-stakes gamble for the GOP as the nation heads toward another crucial vote.
