January 1, Tillis Steps Back Amid Trump’s Potential Opposition

Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina says he won’t run again in 2026. He decided this after President Trump said he might support someone else against Tillis in the next primary election. Tillis used to say he wanted to try for another term, but now that’s changed.

Tillis said leaders who want to work together and think for themselves are getting rare in Washington. He also said he’d rather spend time with his family than go through more years of political battles.

Last Saturday, Tillis and another Republican, Rand Paul, voted against starting debates on a big bill. Tillis didn’t like some of the spending cuts it proposed. The bill still moved forward, but not before Trump criticized Tillis on his social media site, Truth Social.

Trump said lots of people want to run against “Senator Thom” Tillis in the primary. Trump also wants someone new to run against Rep. Thomas Massie from Kentucky. Massie didn’t support the big bill and criticized some military actions, so Trump isn’t happy with him either.
