Wyatt’s Take

  • Texas is checking its voter rolls for people who may not be citizens.
  • Counties will now investigate if these people voted illegally.
  • Anyone proven ineligible could lose their registration or face charges.

Texas completed a check of its voter registration list against citizenship records. Over 2,000 possible noncitizens were identified, and local officials will now investigate.

Those who are found to have voted illegally could be referred for prosecution by the Attorney General’s office.

“Only eligible United States citizens may participate in our elections,” said Secretary of State Jane Nelson. “The Trump Administration’s decision to give states free and direct access to this data set for the first time has been a game changer, and we appreciate the partnership with the federal government to verify the citizenship of those on our voter rolls and maintain accurate voter lists.”

“Everyone’s right to vote is sacred and must be protected,” she continued. “We encourage counties to conduct rigorous investigations to determine if any voter is ineligible — just as they do with any other data set we provide. The SAVE database has proven to be a critically important data set and one of many that we will continue to use in Texas to ensure that only qualified voters cast a ballot in our elections.”

A total of 2,724 possible noncitizens were flagged out of about 18 million voters. Each one will get a letter giving them 30 days to show proof of citizenship, or their registration is canceled. They can restore their registration by showing citizenship after the deadline.
