Wyatt’s Take

  • The current tax code can hit good-faith filers with negligence penalties up to 20 percent.
  • New laws are saving families 24 percent on average compared with the previous administration.
  • Tax exemptions for tips, overtime, and Social Security are direct wins for the heartland.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune says the IRS system remains too complex for honest taxpayers. He wants to simplify the code by lowering rates and broadening the base for everyone.

Thune argues that hardworking families shouldn’t face massive penalties for simple mistakes. He believes current reforms are finally putting more money back into your pockets.

Thune noted that the system still punishes people with late fees and interest even when they try to follow the rules.

I think there are things that we could do and should be doing to make it simpler. Broadening the base, lowering rates, reducing the number of rates.

The GOP leader highlighted how the 2024 tax package significantly expanded the Child Tax Credit and standard deduction.

No tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and lower taxes on seniors on Social Security are all things that are benefiting literally millions of people across this country.

Recent policy changes have reduced the tax liability of seniors and hourly workers by nearly half in some cases.

It is a new day in America in terms of working families and the opportunities they have available to them because of the more money they have in their pockets.

Working families are seeing larger refunds this year because of the permanent expansion of standard deductions.
