January 1, Sparks Fly in Virginia Governor Debate
Wyatt’s Take
- Virginia holds its only governor debate Thursday night.
- Spanberger and Earle-Sears have big differences on key issues.
- Tight polls make this race one to watch for 2026 signals.
Virginia’s only governor debate happens Thursday, with just weeks left before Election Day. Democrat Abigail Spanberger faces Republican Winsome Earle-Sears in a tight race drawing national attention.
This election decides who fills the seat that Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin must leave, since state law blocks two straight terms. Earle-Sears, the current lieutenant governor, is running to expand Youngkin’s economic push and stands strong with President Trump. She recently criticized Spanberger over “relaxed policies” for transgender students in schools.
Spanberger, a former House member and CIA officer, pitches herself as a centrist. She says her focus is on lowering costs for families and securing health care. She first beat a Republican to win her House seat in 2018.
A lot of folks from outside Virginia are watching closely, since the state swings between parties. The only other governor race next month is in New Jersey, and both races could hint at what’s coming in 2026. Right now, polls show Spanberger ahead by about 9 points, but those don’t include newer controversies.
Recently, Democrat attorney general candidate Jay Jones apologized for joking about shooting the former House Speaker in old texts. Spanberger called his actions “inexcusable,” but did not ask him to drop out of his race.
The debate starts at 7 p.m. Eastern, and voters are paying attention.
Whoever wins will have a say in where Virginia goes next. Stay informed and look out for more coverage as Election Day nears.
Wyatt Matters
Virginia’s election cuts to the heart of issues families actually care about—jobs, safety, and the values we raise our kids with. Folks want leaders who put people over party and stand up for common sense in hard times.

Biblical worldview based on Biblical principles and values are key in evaluating choices for future leaders. Praying for Virginia and its people. Amen. “Patriotism” unifies a country.
Patriotism is where people, though different, choose to identify as citizens.
They focus on what they have in common, such as language, morals, and religious faith.
Psalm 133:1 states: “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”
Noah Webster’s 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language defined “PATRIOTISM”:
“Love of one’s country; the passion which aims to serve one’s country, either in defending it from invasion, or protecting its rights and maintaining its laws and institutions in vigor and purity.
Patriotism is the characteristic of a good citizen, the noblest passion that animates a man in the character of a citizen.”
“Citizen” is from the Greek and means co-ruler.
America’s founding was unique. Instead of people having allegiance to a king, the citizens are the king! Praying for Virginia and its people. May they earnestly seek the truth and rediscover their state’s past heritage and take note of its past leaders and hold fast to liberty. Amen.
