January 1, SNAP Benefits Targeted in Major Fraud Wave
Wyatt’s Take
- Over $320 million in SNAP benefits stolen from families across America.
- Many theft cases go unreported, so the real loss is likely higher.
- The government is urged to tighten security and protect food assistance.
Folks all across the country depend on SNAP to put food on the table. Now, a new government report shows crooks have stolen more than $320 million in SNAP benefits over just two years.
Much of this theft goes unnoticed because states don’t have to report every case, so the actual number could be even bigger.
Fraudsters use tricks like skimming, phishing, and pretending to be real stores to steal personal info and drain accounts. Some even use bots to crack PIN codes.
“Theft of benefits could leave victims without means to purchase food, particularly since benefits stolen on or after December 21, 2024, are not eligible for replacement with federal funds,” the GAO said.
The Government Accountability Office urges the Agriculture Department to watch how states guard these benefits and give more help where needed.
It’s working families and struggling folks who get hit hardest when thieves slip through the cracks. Keep up with the fight to protect what’s yours.
Wyatt Matters
When hardworking Americans can’t trust vital programs to deliver honest help, faith in the system breaks down. Protecting food aid keeps our communities strong and families fed.
