Wyatt’s Take

  • Senate couldn’t make a deal; shutdown drags on
  • Vote split shows few breaking from party lines
  • Next chance to reopen comes Monday

The federal government will stay shut at least until Monday after the Senate failed to pass bills to end the closure. Senators voted 54-44, but that wasn’t enough to move things forward.

Some Democrats joined Republicans in the vote, showing cracks in party unity. Senator Rand Paul broke away from most Republicans and voted no, signaling deeper disagreement.

The government first stopped running on Wednesday after Democrats blocked the Republican plan to keep it funded. A second try later that day also failed, and the Senate paused on Thursday for Yom Kippur.

Only two Senators didn’t vote—Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware, and Jerry Moran, a Republican from Kansas. Democrats are bringing up Obamacare tax credits in these talks.

The next vote isn’t scheduled until Monday, so folks across the country will keep feeling the effects of the shutdown through the weekend.
