Wyatt’s Take

  • The Senate failed for the ninth time to pass a bill to reopen the government.
  • Some senators crossed party lines, but the shutdown is now at 15 days with no clear end.
  • Republicans blame Democrats for holding up a deal, leaving Americans in the lurch.

The Senate rejected the latest effort to reopen the federal government, making it the ninth failed vote. Three liberal senators joined with Republicans in hopes of ending the two-week shutdown, but it wasn’t enough.

The vote ended in a 51-44 split, with five senators not showing up to vote. Democrats Catherine Cortez Masto and John Fetterman sided with Republicans, while Republican Rand Paul voted with Democrats. Independent Angus King also backed the measure.

Four Republican senators and one Democrat missed the vote. Senate Majority Leader John Thune pointed the finger at Democrats, saying issues like military pay remain unresolved because of their refusal to budge.

“Democrats show no sign that they’re ready for it to end,” Thune said. “Democrats are dug in. And all those Americans living in uncertainty? Well, they’re just going to have to wait until Democrats’ far-left base is satisfied.”

No one knows yet when the Senate will try again to resolve the shutdown.
