January 1, Report: Manchin Hired Security Detail Amid Threats from Progressives

Published

on

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.VA.) spent a hefty sum on private security detail from October to December 2021 as he was targeted by progressive protesters who were angry at his refusal to support the Build Back Better reconciliation package.

Data from the Federal Election Commission shows that Manchin’s campaign spent more than $75,000 on a private security firm in November.

Manchin and his family were reportedly subjected to threats in Washington and West Virginia.

In August, the Poor People’s Campaign sent a convoy of more than 100 cars to Manchin’s office to urge him to vote to change Senate filibuster rules. In October, protesters in kayaks swarmed Manchin’s yacht. Early in November, climate change protestors surrounded Manchin’s car in a parking garage.

Manchin isn’t the only member of Congress to spend a significant amount of money on security.

Federal Election Commission filings show that Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) spent more than $300,000 on a private security firm through October 2021.

Last year, the Capitol Police reported that the number of threats against members of Congress had more than doubled from the previous year.

It’s disgusting and shameful that he would have to do that. What happened to free speech?
