Wyatt’s Take

  • Most Americans see political violence getting worse ahead.
  • Poll shows many on the left justify attacks against opponents.
  • Lawmakers and experts worry about safety and division in America.

Across the country, people worry about a surge in political violence. A new poll says 55% of Americans expect things to get worse soon, no matter where they live or who they vote for.

Democrats and older folks seem the most uneasy, likely because of recent heated elections and attacks like the killing of Charlie Kirk back in September.

“Seventy-six percent of those who strongly dislike the office expect more trouble,” the poll found.

Only 8% of all those asked think political violence will drop in the future, showing that confidence is slipping. The mood across the country is tense, with folks divided and trust in leaders at a low point.

Lawmakers say things have changed since they started in politics. Many skip public meetings now, just to stay safe. More security and metal detectors are needed, as threats rise sharply.

Recent violence includes the murder of conservative Charlie Kirk, arson at a Democrat governor’s mansion, assassination attempts on President Trump, and the killing of a Minnesota lawmaker who blocked taxpayer benefits for illegal immigrants.

After a July ambush at an ICE center in Texas by an Antifa-linked group, Congress poured more money into protection. Federal agents faced bullets and explosives, with one officer wounded and two suspects now charged with terrorism under President Trump’s order labeling Antifa a domestic terror group.

Protests against federal facilities in Oregon exploded over the summer, pushing the National Guard into action and leading to President Trump’s crackdown on left-wing extremists.

A Rutgers University study found that 55% of left-leaning respondents called the assassination of President Trump “somewhat justifiable.” Almost half said the same about Elon Musk, and nearly 60% supported vandalizing Tesla dealerships as protest. These numbers are much higher than years ago, when just 8% from either party saw any political violence as justified.
