January 1, Pelosi Bows Out as Trump Cheers Her Exit
Wyatt’s Take
- Pelosi ends a major political era by not seeking re-election.
- Trump sees her departure as a win for America.
- The race for her seat is already heating up in left-leaning San Francisco.
Nancy Pelosi says she won’t run for Congress again after her current term. She called her time representing San Francisco ‘the greatest honor’ and looked ahead to a final year serving her district.
“There has been no greater honor for me than to stand on the House floor and say, ‘I speak for the people of San Francisco.’ I have truly loved serving as your voice in Congress, and I’ve always honored the soul of Saint Francisco — ‘Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace.’ The anthem of our city,” Pelosi said.
Pelosi has served in Congress since 1987 and led the House twice, from 2007-2011 and 2019-2023. She often clashed with President Trump, famously tearing up his State of the Union remarks on live TV.
Trump celebrated her retirement, saying it’s a ‘great thing for America.’ He also called her “evil,” “corrupt,” and said, “She was rapidly losing control of her party and it was never coming back. I’m very honored she impeached me twice and failed miserably twice.”
Pelosi’s office had been quiet on her plans until after California voted on a new congressional map, with her spokesperson saying Monday, “Speaker Pelosi is fully focused on her mission to win the Yes on 50 election in CA. Any discussion of her future plans beyond that mission is pure speculation. As she has said, Speaker Pelosi will not make any announcements about her future until after Prop 50 is settled.” Proposition 50 passed Tuesday night.
Pelosi spent most of her farewell video talking about her achievements and priorities for San Francisco. She did not mention Trump or critics, focusing instead on policies like climate change.
The 85-year-old lawmaker is the second Democrat in two days to announce they’re stepping down. Rep. Jared Golden from Maine said he wouldn’t run again, blaming rising threats and division in Congress.
Pelosi’s district will likely stay in Democrat hands, but the contest has already drawn high-profile challengers, including state Sen. Scott Wiener and activist Saikat Chakrabarti. The political drama in San Francisco is just beginning.
