January 1, NYC Mayor-Elect’s Appointees Tied to Anti-Zionist Groups
Wyatt’s Take
- At least 20% of Zohran Mamdani’s appointees have anti-Zionist ties, says a watchdog group.
- Some are linked to groups that organize protests outside synagogues and express hostility toward Israel.
- The Mayor-elect claims to oppose antisemitism, but concerns about his team remain.
A new report says over 80 of New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s picks for transition and administration roles are connected to anti-Zionist groups or have made public anti-Israel statements.
The watchdog found links to organizations like Students for Justice in Palestine, Jewish Voice for Peace, and Within Our Lifetime.
Some appointees were noted for supporting or attending events with controversial figures like Nation of Islam’s Louis Farrakhan, who has been called antisemitic.
“Resistance are [sic] Justified when people are occupied,” one appointee reportedly posted on social media after the Oct. 7 attacks, showing video from a protest in Manhattan.
Other noted examples include public remarks such as “Zionism is racism” and claims that Israel was “ideologically founded on Jewish supremacy.” One appointee was reported to have called Zionists “worse than … Nazis.”
At least 12 team members voiced support for campus protests against Israel earlier this year, with five attending in person. Flyers at these protests included slogans like “Death to Israeli Real Estate” and “Death to America.”
While the report acknowledges that some appointees expressed support for the Jewish community, the watchdog said overall concerns about the safety of New York’s Jewish population remain.
“Many of Mayor-elect Mamdani’s Transition Committee appointments are inconsistent with his campaign commitments to prioritize the safety of New York’s Jewish community,” the report read.
Mamdani’s office insisted he stands against all forms of antisemitism.
