January 1, Nationwide Protests Rise Against Trump Policies
Wyatt’s Take
- Mass protests called ‘No Kings’ target President Trump’s agenda.
- Democrats join rallies as GOP questions their motives.
- National Guard on alert in Virginia for potential unrest.
Millions are expected to gather across the country for ‘No Kings’ protests challenging President Trump and Republican priorities. Events are scheduled in thousands of places on Saturday, drawing large crowds and political leaders who want to be seen standing up to Trump.
Some top Democrats, like Chuck Schumer and Pete Aguilar, said they would attend. Others, like Hakeem Jeffries, weren’t clear on their plans.
Republican leaders believe these protests are meant to distract from the government shutdown and stir up their base.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said:
“It’ll be a collection of wild leftist policy priorities, and that’ll be on display for the whole country. After that’s over, I hope there’s a few Democrats over here who will come to their senses and return to governing the country.”
He also noted he doesn’t expect Democrats to make any deals before these rallies.
Representative Zach Nunn added:
“The real question that’s going to be is, do they have the fortitude after Saturday to come back and open up the government?”
Crowds began forming early in Times Square and the National Mall, with other protests popping up in Texas, North Carolina, Virginia, and even outside the U.S., in London and other countries.
Governor Glenn Youngkin said:
“I want to be clear that Virginians have a fundamental right to free speech and peaceful assembly, but that right does not include the destruction of property, looting, vandalism, disruption of traffic or violence of any kind — for which there will be zero tolerance.”
Protests are set for several Virginia cities, as well as in Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Alaska, and Europe. Organizers plan to keep the pressure on the Trump administration with more rallies on October 18, 2025.
Keep your eyes open, neighbors — these rallies are making waves everywhere and could change how the country talks about Washington leadership. Stay informed and watch how your leaders react.
