January 1, Monster Great White Surfaces Near Canada
Wyatt’s Take
- The biggest great white shark in the Atlantic just showed up by Canada.
- It’s loading up on food before heading south for winter.
- This shark, named Contender, was tracked from Florida all the way up north.
Contender, a 14-foot great white, has been tracked as one of the largest ever seen in the Atlantic. Scientists found him off Canada recently, where he’s filling up on seals before his winter trek to Florida.
The shark’s location is only picked up when its fin pops above water, and last week, researchers caught his signal near the Gulf of St. Lawrence. They say this is the farthest north they’ve picked up a shark signal in their research.
Two months earlier, Contender was spotted near Nantucket. This journey shows just how far these predators can travel to find food and warmth.
