Wyatt’s Take

  • Media painted 2025 as year of climate disaster
  • Actual deaths from extreme weather hit historic low
  • Financial ties may shape media climate stories

Mainstream outlets focused on dramatic coverage of wildfires, floods, and heat in 2025, calling it a chaotic climate year. Missing from their reports is that deaths from extreme weather were the lowest ever recorded.

According to Dr. Roger Pielke, Jr., extreme weather caused only 0.8 deaths per 100,000 people globally in 2025, dropping sharply from more than 320 per 100,000 in 1960.

For years, data show deaths from natural disasters keep falling, even as media headlines scream about worsening conditions.

“Catastrophe sells better than calm weather,” David Blackmon, an energy industry analyst, explained.

Blackmon said media outlets often have direct funding from anti-fossil fuel advocacy groups, leading them to highlight doom and gloom stories while ignoring positives.

The Associated Press, for example, received millions from climate advocacy foundations, which are pushing for major energy policy changes.

“Many of these outlets take money from billionaires and their charitable foundations…there’s no financial incentive for these platforms taking all that money to report any of this good news,” Blackmon added.

Groups like World Weather Attribution, founded to support climate lawsuits, get wide coverage, but criticism of their methods is left out.

2025 even saw a quiet Atlantic hurricane season, with none making landfall in the continental U.S.

Don’t let flashy headlines distract from the facts. When you look at the numbers, 2025 was safer than ever from extreme weather events.
