January 1, Maryland newspaper gunman receives five life sentences
On Tuesday, the man who killed five people at a Maryland newspaper received more than five life sentences without parole.
Anne Arundel County Judge Michael Wachs handed down the sentence to Jarrod Ramos, who a jury found guilty of the murders of Wendi Winters, John McNamara, Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, and Rebecca Smith with a shotgun at the Capital Gazette office in Annapolis in June 2018.
Prosecutors argued that Ramos, 41, committed an act of vengeance against the newspaper after it published a story about his pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of harassing a former high school classmate in 2011.
Wachs described Ramos’ actions as a “cold-blooded, calculated attack on the innocent employees of a small-town newspaper.” The judge also acknowledged that Ramos, who said he would kill again if released, showed a lack of remorse for his gruesome crimes.
In addition to the five life sentences, Wachs added a life sentence for the attempted murder of photographer Paul Gillespie and another 345 years on the other charges.
