Wyatt’s Take

  • Charlie Kirk was killed at Utah Valley University last week.
  • Suspect Tyler Robinson is under special watch before his arraignment.
  • Authorities say leftist ideology may be a factor in the case.

The man accused of killing conservative voice Charlie Kirk is under strict supervision in jail as he waits for his first court appearance. Tyler Robinson, 22, was put in a separate area so jail staff could watch him closely while his mental health is evaluated.

Robinson is expected in court Tuesday afternoon and faces an aggravated murder charge that could carry the death penalty if proven. Prosecutors plan to file formal charges before the hearing, and more charges for obstruction of justice and firing a weapon are possible.

Police believe Robinson fired a single bullet from a rooftop next to Kirk’s campus event, striking Kirk in the neck and causing his death. Video footage showed someone moving on the roof before and after the shot, then leaving quickly after jumping down.

Investigators found a rifle wrapped in a towel near the campus, and the FBI said Robinson’s DNA matched evidence taken from the scene, including a screwdriver found on the roof.

Authorities arrested Robinson over a day later. His father encouraged him to give up, but reached out to a family youth minister, a U.S. Marshal, when Robinson talked about suicide. The minister then contacted the FBI.

Officials are still searching for a motive, but Utah Governor Spencer Cox and former President Donald Trump have said Robinson appeared influenced by far-left ideas.

“It’s very clear to us and to the investigators that this was a person who was deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology,” Cox said.

Trump also said, “Something happened to him over a fairly short period of time. It looks like he was radicalized over the internet and was radicalized on the Left.” He spoke of the federal government examining whether any left-wing groups were involved.

Robinson reportedly lived with a trans-identifying roommate, and had spoken to family about disliking Kirk and knowing Kirk would be visiting the university. Officials say Robinson had grown more political over time.

A Discord account tied to Robinson posted a message admitting to the shooting just before Robinson was arrested: “Hey guys, I have bad news for you all. It was me at UVU yesterday. im sorry for all of this.” Law enforcement received a copy of the message from the platform.
