January 1, Judge orders Trump to give deposition in protest lawsuit
New York Supreme Court Judge Doris Gonzalez ordered former President Trump to provide a videotaped deposition next week as part of a civil lawsuit stemming from a 2015 protest where demonstrators allegedly clashed with members of his security team.
The plaintiffs are a group of Mexican protesters who allege that Trump’s security guards assaulted them and infringed on their constitutional rights while demonstrating against Trump’s comments about Mexican immigrants.
The group filed their lawsuit against Trump, his campaign, his former head of security Keith Schiller, and others following a rally outside Trump Tower in New York City in 2015.
The lawsuit claims that Schiller assaulted one of the protesters after attempting to confiscate a sign that read “Trump: Make America Racist Again.”
Schiller said he was attempting to clear the sidewalk when he hit the protestor.
Trump wasn’t present during the demonstration, but plaintiffs included him as a defendant, arguing that his language encouraged his employees to oppose the protestors forcefully.
The former president “shall appear for a deposition October 18, 2021 at 10 a.m. … or, in the event of illness or emergency, on another mutually agreed to date on or before October 31, 2021,” the order reads.
