January 1, Hollywood Legend Resists Political Correctness to Preserve Movie’s Original Charm
Hollywood legend Michael Keaton recently shared some insight about his vision for the presentation of his iconic Beetlejuice character in the upcoming production, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” The actor noted that he deliberately ensured that the character didn’t toe the line of modern-day political correctness.
Keaton’s refreshing approach to the character challenges the increasingly common trend in Hollywood to questionably update beloved characters to appease the politically correct mob. Explaining to GQ in a recent interview, the veteran actor said, “As for the character himself, there was not a ton of updating to be done there… Beetlejuice, debauched sicko in 1988, remains a debauched sicko in our more enlightened era.”
Keaton’s commitment to preserving the character’s original essence, refusing to give Beetlejuice a ‘sensitivity makeover,’ is a refreshing punch against the current Hollywood machinery’s politically correct culture. He emphasized the character as a timeless entity, stating, “He’s a thing. He’s more of a thing than a he or a she, he’s more of an it… And I’m not saying ‘it’ to be politically correct. I just viewed it as a force more than anything.”
The actor has never been shy about his political views, and has been aware of the potential hazards of celebrity political endorsements, having campaigned for Joe Biden in 2020. He recognizes that Hollywood figures can become political pawns, potentially alienating audiences across the nation.
Keaton also spoke about his decision to keep Beetlejuice’s screen time in line with the original movie, arguing that an increased presence could diminish the character’s impact. He believes that this aligns with the approach in the original series, which served as a guiding principle for the new production.
The sequel, produced by Tim Burton, will retain original cast members Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara while introducing Jenna Ortega and Willem Dafoe to the roster. Keaton offered a promising outlook on the sequel, assuring fans that it will maintain the original’s lively visual experience while introducing some unexpectedly emotional moments.
Keaton’s commitment to preserving the integrity of Beetlejuice, free from the clutches of needless political correctness, is a breath of fresh air in today’s increasingly sensitive Hollywood scene. The timeless presentation of the character proves that genuine entertainment does not need to cater to the whims of modern-day political correctness.
