January 1, Glen Powell Refuses To Join Hollywood’s Political War

Wyatt’s Take
- Glen Powell is walking away from the same political fights that have torn families and communities apart across the country.
- Instead of picking sides, the Texas-born star wants to focus on stories that bring regular folks together.
- His choice to stay out of politics matches what millions of working Americans already believe: entertainment should not push one side’s agenda.
Glen Powell has decided to stay out of the endless political arguments that have split the country.
The actor who starred in Top Gun: Maverick told Esquire he sees politics as the worst kind of conversation.
“Over time, I realized that politics divide people,” Powell said. “People trying to prove their point – for me, it’s the worst version of a conversation. I genuinely do not like the discourse. It’s not as healthy as it once was.”
For Powell, jumping into political debates is simply not an option right now.
“I applaud people for jumping into those things and fighting for what they believe in,” he said. “If I were a political person, I would be talking about it. For me, my calling is elsewhere.”
The star’s views on politics trace back to his childhood in Texas.
Even though his mother worked in the Reagan administration at the Treasury Department, political talk rarely came up at the dinner table.
He repeated the same message in an earlier interview.
“I’m not a political person,” Powell said. “I like things that bring people together.”
With audiences more divided than ever, the actor believes movies can still reach across the split.
“That’s a good point. There’s a universal language of action, which is also why those movies translate so well internationally,” he said. “‘Running Man’ is about something universal – what you would be willing to do for the people you love? But also how people can feel powerless in the face of a world that feels more and more unequal, more unfair.”
“So, you’re not going to see me talk politics. But movies – that’s how I express myself,” Powell added. “Movies are a conversation; politics always felt to me like two people trying to prove a point.”
After years of hard work and small roles, Powell has become one of Hollywood’s top leading men.
He now stars in major films like Twisters and Anyone But You, and he is set to appear in The Comeback King and The Great Beyond.
Outside of acting, Powell is dating fellow actor Michelle Randolph.
“Life is fast for both of us,” he said. “And we have the same values. She loves her family. I love my family. And we both care about work a lot. We both like to show up for our partners. And yet we also understand the balance of it all.”
“There’s something so lovely about someone rooting for you,” Powell added. “Someone who wants you to win in all the ways that are good for you as a human. Not just professionally but in all the ways that are good for your soul.”
Wyatt Matters
Hard-working Americans want stories that lift people up, not arguments that tear them down. When Hollywood stars choose to focus on shared values instead of division, they remind us that family, faith, and honest work still matter more than political noise.
