Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., died Sunday at age 71 following what his office called a “brief and sudden illness.” The loss sent shockwaves through Washington and capitals around the world, as tributes poured in for one of the Senate’s most influential voices on national security and foreign policy.

Graham had served in the Senate since 2003, becoming a leading Republican figure on everything from judicial confirmations to standing firm with allies like Ukraine and Israel. Though he famously clashed with Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign, Graham later became one of the president’s closest allies in the Senate.

President Trump took to Truth Social to honor his friend.

“Lindsey will be greatly missed!!! So sad!”

Trump called Graham “a true American Patriot” who “was always working.”

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster didn’t hold back, calling Graham “irreplaceable” and the “fiercest of fighters for South Carolina and America.” Under state law, McMaster will appoint a temporary replacement for Graham, who was running for a fifth term this November.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said his “heart is heavy,” praising Graham as a trusted adviser whose work “on the federal judiciary, our national defense, and his beloved South Carolina will be felt for generations.”

Thune highlighted Graham’s unwavering belief in American power as a force for good, saying the senator spent his career advancing that cause around the globe.

U.S. UN Ambassador Mike Waltz remembered Graham not just as a colleague, but as a fellow military officer. Waltz first met Graham when the senator was serving as a colonel in the Air National Guard, spending his annual training deployments in Afghanistan helping train Afghan Army legal officers.

Waltz praised Graham’s relentless commitment to troops and foreign policy, saying no member of Congress traveled more—”from Libya to Lebanon”—to meet with American servicemembers and bring back ground truth to shape legislation.

“Rest easy, Patriot,” Waltz wrote on X.

Even Democrats paid their respects. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., called Graham “kind, gracious, and thoughtful,” and a foreign policy expert.

“Sudden and awful news about Senator Lindsey Graham,” Fetterman wrote. “The United States Senate lost a foreign policy giant.”

The tributes didn’t stop at America’s borders. World leaders across Europe and the Middle East mourned the loss of one of Washington’s strongest voices for American strength and allied security.

Just last week, Graham made his 10th trip to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion, meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss tougher sanctions on Moscow and Ukraine’s air defense needs.

After Graham’s death, Zelenskyy honored him on X, calling Graham “a true defender of freedom” who stood with Ukraine “when it was most needed.”

He said Graham’s bipartisan work to ramp up pressure on Russia helped bring “peace closer,” adding:

“America and the world have lost a determined leader.”

European leaders echoed that sentiment.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte called Graham “a powerful advocate for America” who believed strongly in the NATO Alliance and worked actively to end Russia’s war on Ukraine. Former NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg praised Graham’s “tireless commitment” to NATO and the transatlantic partnership, along with his “staunch support” for Ukraine.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Graham was “a true friend and partner of Germany in the transatlantic alliance.”

“We stood side by side for more than four decades.”

In the Middle East, Graham was remembered as one of Israel’s most loyal defenders in Congress.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called him “a great friend of Israel” and “a cherished friend of mine,” saying Graham understood that the security of Israel and the United States “is inseparable.”

“Israel has lost one of its greatest friends. America has lost a great patriot. I have lost a beloved friend,” Netanyahu said.

Former Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren told the Associated Press that Graham’s death leaves a massive void in Congress at a critical time.

“You have a few Democrats and Republicans willing to stand up in Israel’s defense, but those type of people are few, it’s not a body of people. So when you lose someone like Lindsey Graham, it’s a diplomatic and strategic loss for the state of Israel.”

Why It Matters

Lindsey Graham wasn’t perfect, but he understood something Washington keeps forgetting: American strength isn’t optional. When we stand with our allies and our troops, we keep the world safer and our enemies weaker. Losing a voice like that—someone who actually believed in what this country stands for—leaves a hole that won’t be easy to fill.
