  • Trump acts to tackle crime and changes bail rules.
  • More states send National Guard troops to support cleanup.

Washington, D.C. just had its first murder since President Trump put the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control. A man was shot in Southeast D.C. and later died at the hospital, according to police.

“On Tuesday, August 26, at approximately 12:24 a.m., Sixth District officers responded to the 300 block of Anacostia Road, Southeast, for a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to an area hospital, and after all life saving efforts, was pronounced dead.”

This incident ends a 13-day streak without a homicide, since Trump deployed the National Guard and took charge of city policing over rising violence.

Trump also signed an order scrapping cashless bail in D.C., making it easier to hold criminals while they await trial. The move directs local police and courts to keep offenders in federal custody and seek tougher charges, including pretrial detention.

If the city sticks with its old bail rules, the administration warns that federal funds could be cut or other steps taken to force action.

Ohio, South Carolina, and West Virginia have also sent their National Guard troops to help tackle crime and homelessness in the city.
