Wyatt’s Take

  • Federal workers at a tiny agency were caught living large on taxpayers’ dime.
  • Luxury perks and personal expenses ran wild for years without oversight.
  • After the truth came out, the agency was finally closed.

For years, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) operated with little oversight while its staff enjoyed luxury and perks at taxpayer expense. Fancy offices, personal spending with government cards, and even commissioned paintings were all part of everyday life at this small agency.

“Let me give you the honest truth: A lot of FMCS employees don’t do a hell of a lot, including myself,” one worker admitted. “Personally, the reason that I’ve stayed is that I just don’t feel like working that hard, plus the location on K Street is great, plus we all have these oversized offices with windows, plus management doesn’t seem to care if we stay out at lunch a long time. Can you blame me?”

Managers had private bathrooms; some were used as lounges, and others as smoking rooms. The director managed to have all living expenses covered for years by claiming a constant business trip.

One top official used a fund for personal champagne and artwork by his wife, and the agency paid thousands just for restoring managers’ portraits. Employees figured out how to bypass spending safeguards and rack up personal expenses on government cards—everything from luxury cars to vacation home cable bills.

When an accountant blew the whistle, bosses made her retract her claim. Even after clear audit abuses, the agency kept rolling along until outside reporting brought everything to light.

This kind of waste and fraud is why folks have lost trust in big government. While most Americans work hard for every dollar, some in Washington treat tax money like their own private stash.
