A Florida woman has been arrested after authorities say she ran a multi-year scam, lying about having cancer and stealing more than $40,000 from over 200 trusting neighbors who believed they were helping someone fight for her life. Maribeth Ellen Jones, 51, of Bonita Springs, now faces grand theft charges after turning herself in at the Naples Jail Center this week.

Jones worked as an activities director in her community—a position of trust. Between 2022 and 2024, she allegedly told residents she had cancer and was undergoing treatment. More than 200 people donated cash, checks, and money through GoFundMe, believing they were supporting a neighbor in desperate need.

Detectives say Jones went to disturbing lengths to maintain her lie. She even had community members cut her hair to make it look like she was preparing for chemotherapy. The fraud escalated as she claimed her condition was worsening, squeezing even more money from kindhearted victims.

Community members set up a GoFundMe page linked directly to Jones’s personal bank account. They also handed her cash and personal checks, trusting that every dollar would go toward her medical fight.

This wasn’t Jones’s first rodeo. Detectives discovered she had been the beneficiary of two previous GoFundMe campaigns where she also falsely claimed to have cancer. The pattern of deception stretched back years.

“GoFundMe has zero tolerance for the misuse of our platform and anyone who seeks to take advantage of the generosity of others,” a GoFundMe spokesperson said.

“We can confirm fundraisers organized on behalf of Maribeth Jones were removed from our platform, and her account was banned for any future fundraising. More than $41,000 was refunded to donors on the platform through GoFundMe’s Giving Guarantee, which offers a full refund in the rare case something isn’t right.”

The investigation revealed what neighbors feared: Jones never had cancer. She used the donated money to pay off personal debts—not medical bills, not treatment, but her own financial mess. In total, she is accused of defrauding 238 Naples residents out of more than $40,000.

“This is an appalling case because it exploited the kindness and generosity of people who truly wanted to help someone they believed was fighting for her life,” Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said in a statement.

“If you lie to steal from the generosity of others in Collier County, we will arrest you and hold you accountable.”

“This type of scam not only hurts victims financially, it undermines trust in legitimate fundraisers for people who genuinely need help,” Rambosk added.
