Wyatt’s Take

  • Key races in Virginia and New Jersey could show which way the country is leaning for next year’s big election.
  • California voters face a major decision on redistricting that could sway U.S. House control.
  • Scandals and close polls have both parties on edge, fighting for every vote.

Election Day 2025 is underway, with important battles in Virginia and New Jersey drawing national attention. Both parties see these races as a way to test their strength for the next midterms.

Voters in California are also making a choice on whether to redraw House districts in a way that could help Democrats, an idea pushed by Governor Gavin Newsom in response to redistricting efforts in conservative states. The outcome will impact the fight for the U.S. House next year.

In Virginia, polls show Democrat Abigail Spanberger ahead in the race for governor. Democrats look ready to take back the governor’s seat after Glenn Youngkin’s term, though Republicans are keeping it close in downballot races.

“A sign of Spanberger’s growing strength is among male voters, a group that was split last month but now breaks for her by six points, 52% to 46%. These voters backed Governor Youngkin by about 12 points in 2021.”

The attorney general race is nearly tied. Scandal-hit Democrat Jay Jones faces Republican Jason Miyares, who’s gaining ground. Jones lost support after text messages surfaced where he wrote violent comments about a political rival and later apologized.

“Like all people, I’ve sent text messages that I regret, and I believe that violent rhetoric has no place in our politics.”

Miyares now leads in some polls, showing a late shift. The rest of the ticket for both parties is feeling the pressure as the voting wraps up.

In New Jersey, it’s a tough contest between Republican Jack Ciattarelli and Democrat Mikie Sherrill. Recent polls put them nearly tied, with Sherrill just ahead. Her campaign has stumbled from old scandals, including trouble at the U.S. Naval Academy and questions about stock trading disclosures.

These state contests are getting called ‘bellwethers,’ but experts remind folks that off-year wins don’t always predict the mood of the country for midterms. Still, for working families wondering which way America’s headed, these results will send a big message.
