Wyatt’s Take

  • The DOJ is considering banning gun sales for those with gender dysphoria.
  • This proposal goes beyond existing mental health barriers for buying firearms.
  • Critics say it erodes Second Amendment rights without fixing deeper problems.

The Department of Justice is rumored to be weighing a move to block Americans with gender dysphoria from buying guns. A leaked comment from a DOJ insider said, “Individuals within the DOJ are reviewing ways to ensure that mentally ill individuals suffering from gender dysphoria are unable to obtain firearms while they are unstable and unwell.”

This possible ban has stirred up debate. Some say targeting people with gender issues doesn’t keep anyone safer. Current gun laws already stop those who have been ruled mentally unfit or committed to institutions from buying firearms. The required 4473 background check form specifically asks if someone has been “adjudicated as a mental defective OR have you ever been committed to a mental institution.”

Opponents argue that the real problem isn’t a lack of laws, but a culture and government that now encourages confusion over gender. As some see it, more gun rules only distract from addressing violence at its root. One DOJ source reportedly commented, “Democrats have called for common sense gun laws for a long time.”

Some worry this effort could pull conservative lawmakers into supporting stricter gun laws. Instead, they urge enforcing the mental health rules already in place, and pushing back against organizations that promote radical gender ideology. Many are also calling to remove “non-binary” gender options on federal firearms forms, saying it only adds confusion.

The Trump administration is under pressure from conservative voices to stay true to the Second Amendment. They argue more gun bans won’t fix the bigger issues facing American families today.
