January 1, Diplomatic Tension Escalates as Afghanistan Faces U.S. Scrutiny Over Detentions

Wyatt’s Take
- Secretary Rubio rightly calls out Taliban hostage-taking of Americans.
- These terrorist thugs must release Dennis Coyle and Mahmoud Habibi now.
- America demands an end to their despicable kidnapping games.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio designated Afghanistan a state sponsor of wrongful detention. He accused the Taliban of unjustly holding Americans and others.
I am designating Afghanistan as a State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention,
Rubio said.
The Taliban continues to use terrorist tactics, kidnapping individuals for ransom or to seek policy concessions. These despicable tactics need to end.
Rubio demanded freedom for 64-year-old Dennis Coyle, detained over a year without charges while researching Afghan languages. Mahmoud Habibi, 38, grabbed in Kabul in 2022, vanished since.
The U.S. also seeks Paul Overby’s remains, missing since 2014 near Pakistan. Passport bans like North Korea’s could hit Taliban travel if demands ignored.
Taliban gripes about the label but pushes dialogue after seizing power in 2021 chaos. Rubio hit Iran similarly last month over its detainees.
Folks, back strong leaders getting our people home safe. Tell Congress to keep pressure on these terrorists.
