January 1, Deportation Battle Heats Up for Salvadoran National

- Federal plea deals raise questions on accountability

Another immigration story unfolds as Kilmar Abrego Garcia faces deportation yet again. After a stint in a Tennessee jail, he now has to report to ICE in Baltimore.
Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran citizen, was held since June after being wrongly deported to El Salvador earlier this year. Now, the feds want him sent to Uganda, which recently agreed to take in deportees under certain cases.
Officials offered him removal to Costa Rica if he pled guilty to human smuggling. His lawyers say he has until Monday to take it—otherwise, that offer disappears.
He just reunited with his wife and kids in Maryland, but the legal uncertainty continues. Costa Rica says he’d be welcomed as a legal immigrant, with no detention.
Justice Department spokesman Chad Gilmartin said the charges show Abrego Garcia is a “clear danger.”
“Either way, we will hold Abrego Garcia accountable and protect the American people,” Gilmartin said.
Abrego Garcia says he’s not guilty and wants his case dropped. In 2022, police in Tennessee let him go with a warning for speeding, even after suspecting smuggling because of a packed vehicle.
Officials claim he can be deported for illegal entry and a judge approved his removal in 2019, just not to El Salvador, due to risks there.
These complex immigration decisions show just how muddled the system is. Policies and plea deals shouldn’t undercut the safety and security of American families.

All these legal loopholes and back-and-forth decisions remind us how important secure borders and tough enforcement are to protect our towns and neighborhoods.

Declare martial law then get rid of them all. That takes judges out of the mix.
