January 1, DC Sees Rare Peace After Guard Steps In
Wyatt’s Take
- DC has gone twelve days without a homicide, a rare stretch for the city.
- The odds of this happening are far less than one percent, according to expert analysis.
- Most of the lives saved belong to the black community.
For the first time that folks can remember, Washington, D.C. went twelve straight days with no homicides reported. Expert John Lott says the odds of this happening, based on 2024 numbers, are only 0.35%.
Looking at the first seven months of 2025, he notes the odds inch up to just 0.58%.
“The lives being saved are almost all black,” he said.
This comes after the National Guard was brought in to take charge, showing a clear link between stronger law enforcement and fewer violent deaths.
These numbers fall well under the common 5% mark researchers use to call a result meaningful.
Time will tell if this safer streak can last and what it will mean for everyday families in D.C.
