President Trump scored a legal win after an appeals court allowed him to send National Guard troops to Portland. The court overturned an earlier order that had blocked the deployment of troops during ongoing protests in the city.

The Ninth Circuit’s three-judge panel said it’s up to the President to decide how to use federal troops when public safety is at risk. The judges agreed Trump’s reasons for wanting to send the Guard may not be widely known but must be respected by the courts.

“Even if the President may exaggerate the extent of the problem on social media, this does not change that other facts provide a colorable basis to support the statutory requirements,” the order stated.

This ruling means Trump has full authority to use the National Guard to protect federal property and law enforcement officers as needed.
