Country duo Dan + Shay came within inches of splitting up right when they hit the top of their game. The partnership between Dan Smyers, 39, and Shay Mooney, 34, nearly collapsed under the weight of success most artists only dream about.

Speaking on the “Artist Friendly” podcast, the duo admitted their working relationship had turned toxic. They weren’t talking, they weren’t on the same page, and the tension was eating them alive.

“There was just a communication stop,” Mooney explained.

“We had that moment in 2021, and it was kind of like, all right, do we ride off into the sunset and celebrate our accomplishments or do, like, we have some maybe really hard conversations with each other and fix this?” Mooney said.

The breaking point came when they landed the opening slot for Kenny Chesney’s massive tour. It should’ve been a celebration. Instead, it felt like a funeral.

Smyers recalled they didn’t even know if they could take the gig given how bad things had gotten between them.

“We have to figure this out,” they realized, even if that meant treating the Chesney tour as a farewell.

The two met at Smyers’ house for what became the most important conversation of their careers. It was do-or-die time.

“We’re either going to say peace out to this thing or we’re going to figure this out and get it right,” Mooney said.

“He ended up staying at the house till like 3:00, 4 in the morning and just hashing,” Smyers added.

Turns out the problem was simple but deep: they process stress completely differently. Mooney didn’t understand why Smyers couldn’t just enjoy the ride, even when things went wrong on stage.

Smyers would get worked up over technical glitches — a busted video wall, sound issues, behind-the-scenes problems most fans never notice. Mooney, meanwhile, could roll with just about anything and still have a good time.

“When we finally were like, ‘Hey, you’re not good at enjoying these things sometimes. I enjoy everything even when it’s bad,'” Mooney said. “So if we can meet somewhere in the middle, we can make this beautiful thing. Which is what happened in the beginning.”

They both apologized. They both owned their part in letting things fall apart. And they made a new rule: speak up when something’s bothering you instead of letting it fester until it blows up.

Dan + Shay burst onto the country scene in 2013 with “19 You + Me.” Their debut album “Where It All Began” dropped in 2014, and by 2018 they had their massive breakout hit “Tequila.”

That song won them their first Grammy in 2019. They followed it up with back-to-back wins in 2020 and 2021 for “Speechless” and “10,000 Hours.”

All that success nearly destroyed them. But they chose the hard road — the honest conversation, the late night, the mutual respect — and saved what they’d built together.
