January 1, Costco Rotisserie Chicken Debacle: What Are Your Thoughts?

Published

on

Costco shoppers have long been fans of the retailer’s famous rotisserie chickens, which sold a staggering 137 million in 2023 at a low price of $4.99 each. However, a recent change in packaging has left some customers less than thrilled.

In March, Costco started using plastic bags instead of the usual hard clamshell containers for its rotisserie chickens. Although not yet implemented nationwide, the bags have been popping up in many local warehouses. A memo on Reddit in March claimed the bags reduce plastic use by 75%, making them more environmentally friendly.

The switch to bags has resulted in mixed reactions from shoppers. Some praised Costco’s efforts in reducing plastic waste, while others are not happy with the change. Recently, negative feedback has been on the rise.

One customer complained on Reddit about leaky bags, which spilled chicken juice all over their car trunk. The post attracted over 500 comments from other customers and employees sharing their own poor experiences with the new packaging.

Many people mentioned that the bags are oily or slick with juice, leading to a messier shopping experience. “My main gripe is that they’re always super greasy and [there are] no wipes, towels, or paper towels in the area to help clean one’s hands off… the cart handles have gotten noticeably grosser in the months since switching to the bags,” one shopper wrote.

Another customer commented, “I bought the rotisserie in a bag about a month ago and was so annoyed with the whole situation I haven’t bought one since. Greasy bag, doesn’t close, no crispy skin, falls apart trying to remove it. Not a fan at all.”

Some Costco workers also expressed dissatisfaction with the new bags. “As a deli worker, I hate the bags. It takes longer to put [chickens] in the bag compared to the container and it’s messier,” a Redditor shared.

To make the situation more manageable, some shoppers offered tips, such as double-bagging the chickens with the orange plastic bags found in Costco’s meat department, or using a box or container to transport the chickens home. “I carry a plastic bin all the time in the back seat cuz I learned the hard way too,” a customer noted.

However, others suggest avoiding Costco’s rotisserie chickens altogether. “Bags are awful. I started buying rotisserie chicken from a different store that still uses containers,” one Redditor commented.

I also do not like the bags at all. Also, the quality and size of the chicken have changed. The golden brown
Look of the chicken are gonevandvI feel they do not taste as good. Will probably not continue to buy Costco chickens!

Although I totally agree with eliminating all the plastic waste, the chicken in a bagwould prohibit me from buying one. Too messy and inadequate storage. Keep the containers.

The problem could probably be resolved with a more robust zip-lock feature on the bag. So they really stay shut.

Simple many restaurants are doing the way with plastic all together and going with hard cardboard shells… 100% biodegradable… With plastic, it never goes away, not in your lifetime. We simply move it from one pile to the next we simply leave our kids to deal with it ! 🙄

Bags are a mess ! Seems Costco will be losing out via Rotisserie Chicken customers ! ACME and ShopRite have great tasting chicken even though it is a bit more expensive. I’d still rather pay more than dealing with messy bagged, uncrispy chicken and messy cart handles ! YUK !

Costco chickens have been 4.99 forever. Why not keep the preferred packaging and just charge a few cents more to off set the cost? The 5.10 super chicken sounds good.

i agree would pay .25 more for the better packaging. maybe they can find a recyclable container that is more stable. i won’t buy them. Sans chickens taste better if you can get one.

NEVER CARED FOR COSTCO CHICKENS. ALWAYS BLOODY INSIDE. NEVER HAVE A GREAT COLOR OR CRUNCHY SKIN. STOPPED GETTING THEM 20 YEARS AGO.

Ive never seen such senseless whining. So now knowing Costco has been environmentally proactive, people find SOMETHING to bitch about? Bring a heavy duty container FROM HOME next time, and your problem is solved, or buy a whole chicken and take it home and ROAST IT YOURSELF.

Yes I agree the bags are terrible. I like the plastic containers so much better. No problems. Stays fresh
Plastic bags don’t close right seal the chicken
    I don’t mind paying instead of 5.49
To 5.99 for the chicken in plastic containers

Just replace the chicken altogether with python meat. Much healthier and no complaints

These bags are messy and greasy on the outside, hard to handle and never sure if they will stay upright, they leak and now i have a permanent oil/grease stain in my floor mat. Costco has caused more problems for customers with this change. We have refused to purchase one of their best products.

I agree – I don’t like the bags either. They are definitely messier to handle. And, it’s hard to get the chicken OUT of the bag without it falling apart!

Protest by not buying the chicken. The rumors I’ve heard, those chickens are raised very inhumanely. After hearing that, I refuse to buy the chicken either way. I only buy meat from reputable meat companies.
