January 1, Costco Membership Fee Hike Sparks Clever Renewal Strategy to Save Money

Prepare to dig just a tad deeper into your wallet this fall, folks. Costco, the much-loved, membership-only wholesaler, has revealed plans to increase their membership fees starting September 1. This news comes after a year and a half of speculation and anticipation. But fear not, there might be a handy way for Costco loyalists to sidestep this price bump for an additional year, thanks to some sage advice being shared across social media.
On July 10, Costco declared that the price for its standard Gold Star membership is set to increase from $60 to $65 annually in both the United States and Canada. Additionally, those who enjoy the luxury perks of the pricier Executive Membership tier will see their yearly fee jump from $120 to $130. As to be expected, the decision ignited a mixed response among the store’s shoppers. While some have taken the news in stride, others aren’t too thrilled about parting with more of their hard-earned money.
In the midst of this controversy, one resourceful Costco customer outlined a clever strategy to avoid the impending fee surge on Reddit this week. The shopper suggested that simply renewing memberships before the September 1 deadline could lock in the current annual rate for another year. The customer clarified that membership renewals add another year onto the expiration date, essentially enabling members to dodge this cost increment.
The individual, after renewing their own membership, shared, “The fine print on my renewal notice said that the price you pay is the price in effect at the time you pay. So do it before the end of August and avoid the price increase.”
There is, however, one minor hitch in this plan. Costco permits members to renew their memberships only within 90 days of their expiration date. This means that members with an expiration date post late November might have to face the hike head-on. But for those within their renewal period before the September 1 deadline, acting swiftly to renew could keep this cost increase at bay for a while longer. Several Costco shoppers have already capitalized on this nifty trick, securing their memberships for another year at the current rate.
Some relieved customers took to Reddit to share their success stories. “Great tip. My membership renewal was end of September. I was able to log in online and re-up at the current price. Confirmed it bumped another year to my anniversary,” one commented. Another gleefully said, “Thanks for the tip! I just saved myself $10!”
For those looking to follow suit, renewing a membership could not be easier. Customers can renew online via the Costco website, in person during their next warehouse run, or over the phone by dialing 1-800-774-2678. So, don’t hesitate to take action promptly and keep that extra money in your pocket!

I don’t find $10.00 a BIG DEAL.
Of it was a $50.00 increase, I would feel differently.

I mostly use it to purchase my eye glasses. I am single oder person so most things are in too big of a quantity for me to use.

Truthfully a $5 increase is not over the top for me. $25 or 50 I would go for it
