January 1, Congressional Probe Reveals Billions Wasted on Telework

The House Oversight and Accountability Committee found that lots of federal workers are staying home to work instead of going to the office, and it’s costing us lots of taxpayer money. This is happening because President Biden and his team have let it continue, even as President-elect Trump is set to take over soon.

The committee is upset that the Biden-Harris administration has let union leaders decide too much, letting workers stay home and not focusing on getting the job done for the American people. They found that out of 2.28 million federal workers, lots of them hardly ever go to the office. Some workers never have to go in at all!

Even though COVID-19 is over, teleworking workers have doubled since before the pandemic. Now, a bunch of federal agencies have way more people working from home. For example, at the Department of Education, 55% of folks are working remotely now, compared to only 2% back in 2019.

A report showed that many government building spaces are barely being used. Some places have their headquarters almost empty, but they’re still costing the government about $7 billion a year to keep up.

Committee Chairman James Comer from Kentucky said it’s wild that agencies spent billions on furniture for offices that are mostly empty. And get this, some leaders, like Robin Carnahan from the General Services Administration, didn’t even spend much time in their office in D.C. She was mostly working from home in Missouri.

There are also issues with how Biden’s team has worked with unions to keep teleworking going for federal workers. In November, they made deals to guarantee teleworking even more, just as Biden and Harris are getting ready to step down.

But President Trump is ready to fix things. He wants to make sure workers go back to the office and stop playing games that cost taxpayers money. Congress is also thinking about making new rules to change how teleworking is done and how workers are paid if they are working from home.

Comer says too many federal workers are still staying at home, and they have to get back to the office to do their jobs for the American people. This is why we’re looking forward to working with President Trump to make sure our government is doing what’s best for us, not just making it easier for federal workers to work from home.

Keeping offices open while most workers are teleworking means the government is spending money it might not need to. Some offices are nearly deserted, yet we’re still paying for furniture and upkeep. This adds up to about $7 billion a year, which could be used for other important things. People like Robin Carnahan from the General Services Administration show that leaders, too, are often not in their offices, proving that our current approach might not be the best.

Now that President Trump is preparing to take charge, there is talk of bringing people back to the office. This could help make sure that our government is working more efficiently and not wasting taxpayer money. It’s important for everyone, not just those working in government offices, to see changes that make sure resources are spent wisely. Getting back to in-person work in the office might help achieve this and restore confidence in our government system.

    And … You can bet on it that most of these teleworkers are not putting in a full day’s work since there is no supervision ! Get their lazy butts back into the office where they belong !!!

    It’s unbelievable that this is still going on. I, too, doubt they are working as many hours as are reported.

    Another waste of money, virtual learning. Most students don’t even sign on. My grandson split his screen, put a clip of him listening, and was playing games on the other half of the screen! If he figured it out, I’m sure many others did too!

    Sounds good if you are a mid to upper-level government employee. Sign in from home on your government supplied computer and then sign into your other non-government job on that computer and work at that until the government computer buzzes you that you have an incoming message.
